Livestock Health and Production (MSC, Postgraduate Diploma and Postgraduate Certificate)

Structure and syllabus

MSc degree consists of seven courses 7 courses (3 compulsory, 4 optional):

Compulsory core courses:

• Animal disease Part I (current concepts)
• Development and monitoring of livestock and production systems 
• Principles of livestock production

Optional courses:

• Animal disease Part 2 (Infectious and production diseases – a species approach)
• Animal welfare
• Epidemiology and animal health economics
• Economics for livestock development and policy
• Management of infectious viral disease outbreaks in animal populations *
• Reproduction and fertility – a species approach
• Research, design, management and grant application writing ‡
• Veterinary public health

Postgraduate Diploma consists of four courses comprised of:

Two compulsory core courses:

• Animal disease Part I

AND one other chosen from the following:

• Development and monitoring of livestock and production systems 
• Principles of livestock production

PLUS

two other courses chosen from the remaining core course and the
optional courses of the MSc degree (excluding the Research project).

Postgraduate Certificate consists of two courses comprised of:

• Animal disease Part I

AND one other chosen from the following:

• Development and monitoring of livestock and production systems 

• Principles of livestock production

Note:

‡ Access to the Internet is required (56K dial-up modem or broadband).

* Expected to be first available in 2009.

Short courses

The individual courses of the degrees can also be studied as stand-alone 240-hour Short courses for CPD, allowing students to sample a discrete learning unit. On completion of the course a student can transfer onto the degree programme.

There are also a range of shorter 50-hour and 35-hour Short courses.
